Mine
Between the black sap of midnight
and the pinprick of first light
I sluice my mind, waist deep

and sodden; I cull
the thin gold vein of reason.

If your leaden form lay
still before me, smell of your skin,
sound of your hair growing,
I would not think

to liquefy my hours upon
this crude, preemptive pyre.
I would not think at all about the future,

tucked away and dormant like
some undiscovered continent,

where even chaff gives off a cresting
glint, perhaps. We aren't old.

When it Rains (Platitudes)
The snapboned woman sitting next to me,
head wrapped in a clear plastic bonnet,
is waiting on the same bus.

Carpe diem, so they say. They
couldn't have meant every day.

Once she was as young as me;
younger. Now her wet throat is swept
with folds, and doggish hair;
Her eyes are like almonds blanching.
It seems to hurt. I wonder how.

When I get home, the kitchen light is off,
not a soul, nobody says a thing
until the kettle starts to whisper,
whines, then shrieks.

"Give me chastity and continence.."
(an echo from a ruptured catacomb)
"Give me chastity and continence, but not yet."
