American
Buckshot sprang erotic
even pit the columns of the opera house.
But the holes were filled in
within the fortnight
(likewise, lizards do not mourn
their stolen tails, because they know.)

Statues cast in bronze
would turn as green as a clean sea
but talk about replacement, and
what looks you'd get!
Oxidation: gorgeous even gorging.

I was one way, I was so for some time;
and then, not knowing what it meant,
entreated you: "Come in, it's cold out there..."

And by the time the raze began
I feared you as the soil fears seed.

Come down on me like the Allies on Berlin,
hard, ardent, and relentless

That after, much has to be built anew.
Leave something: A percentage, a periphery,
the jutting, polished skeletons of opulence.
