Predisposition
I sit and watch the sheets
weeping on the beaten line,
the tears milky and clean,
the wet hems grazing air.

Out of the corner of my eye,
the hydrangeas shudder, beg decapitation.
They are twentysomething now,
blossoms the color of a sick tongue.
The decade past, they were puffed out
as bright and pink as gum.

You can't come down and play with me
so I toy with my thoughts instead:

(And anyway, you would have seen
a different garden)

I think of this: Now, wouldn't it be funny?
If you'd plant a little seed inside
of me, and we'd neglect to rip it out?

What if we gave it the name Soledad,
and it had nothing of its father?
Or if we called it Dolores,
and it had nothing of its mother?
